Qiviut Needle-felted Mitten Insert with Tanis Simpson (10+)

Join Tanis Simpson for a unique workshop to create Qiviut mitten inserts using needle felting techniques. Using ultra-soft muskox wool, or qiviut, participants will craft warm, luxurious pieces to insert into mittens for extra warmth. Qiviut is cherished for its rarity, softness, and unparalleled warmth—said to be eight times warmer than wool and softer than cashmere. Learn about Umingmak—“the bearded one” and the heirloom fiber treasured by Inuvialuit for generations across the Arctic. All supplies included and everybody is welcome. Tanis 'Akutuq' Simpson (Inuvialuk) is originally from Sachs Harbour, Northwest Territories, and is the founder of Qiviut Inc.—a 100% Inuvialuit-owned fibre mill based in Nisku, Alberta. Together with her brother, Bradley Carpenter, Tanis grew up with qiviut as a part of daily life; their parents and grandparents would tuck the soft muskox fibre into their mitts and boots for warmth. Today, Tanis is dedicated to sharing and educating others about qiviut—its cultural significance, exceptional qualities, and connection to Inuvialuit tradition.
