Pottery

Ranked as one of the best pottery studios in the province, the Clay Hut has been home to Strathcona County's iconic pottery program since 1978. Our programs are designed to introduce students to various techniques and methods of working with clay, or hone their existing skills.

Clay Hut studio is located on site at Smeltzer House, #1 Broadmoor Boulevard, Sherwood Park, Alberta. More information for in-person programs run out of Clay Hut can be viewed here.

Form and Surface Design with Kaleb Romano (18Y+)


Join us for an expert-led ceramic workshop hosted by Kaleb Romano, focused on creating unique functional forms with captivating surface decorations. Explore various techniques for altering wheel-thrown forms, integrating hand-built elements and texture, slip and various surface embellishments, and discover how to design and enhance your creations in truly exceptional ways. During the workshop, participants will have ample practice time and opportunities for personal discussions with the instructor. Prior experience with pottery wheel is required. Materials will be provided. Only some pottery will be bisque fired – the main focus will be on learning techniques that can be applied in your ongoing ceramic practice.

Clay Circle (55Y+)


JOIN US! We still have spots available for this course. Registration will remain open until May 6, 2024. Spend your mornings at the Clay Hut studio, learning traditional hand-building techniques. Learn to pinch, coil, and roll clay for crafting stunning handmade pottery pieces, which you can decorate with glaze in the final session. After each class, enjoy tea, coffee, treats, and delightful conversations with your fellow attendees at Smeltzer House. All supplies are included.

Family Clay (6Y+)


Introduce your family and friends to the wonders of clay. Explore pinch and coil techniques while you create memories and your own treasures in clay. No prior experience needed, and all materials are provided. Collect your finished projects in 3-4 weeks.

Kids Clay (6Y-8Y / 9Y-12Y)


Kids will have a blast getting creative and messy as they roll, pinch, and sculpt whimsical creatures, coiled bowls and slab pots using basic ceramics techniques. No prior experience is needed, and all supplies will be provided. So let the fun begin!

Pottery (18Y+)


At Clay Hut studio, our classes are designed to help new to pottery explore various techniques and methods for working with clay, as well as sharpen the skills of those already familiar with the craft. Our instructors are here to support your learning journey and guide you in mastering this beautiful art form. Let's dive into the world of pottery together!

Teens Pottery (12Y-17Y)


Introduce young pottery enthusiasts to creative hand building and basic wheel throwing techniques. All materials are provided. No prior experience needed. Please bring your own apron, hand towel, and wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting clay on.

You + Me + Clay (3Y+)


Bring the little ones to create their very first clay project to treasure for years to come. This class is for a group of up to three participants (adult + max of 2 kids) per booking. Adult participation is required. All supplies included. Project pick up in 3-4 weeks.
